putting on my running shoes

if you think of it, keep my friend, Sandy in your prayers. she has been mourning the loss of her only sister this week. it was sudden and tragic. tomorrow they say their final good-byes and attempt to move on in their lives without her. she was only a year older than myself.

on a less solemn note....

we finished the winter session of gymnastics yesterday.

Photobucket

i can vividly recall sitting at our kitchen table with the yellow pages back in January 2007. Kiara was only a few months old and Aidan had more energy than he could handle. it was also cold! no playground days and we both needed something. his library group and kids morning out groups were not enough for him! and me. i jotted notes while i called pretty much every gymnastics club in the city. in the end we all ended up going to a 'parent and tot' program.

Photobucket

wee little Kiara would watch from her infant car seat most days. the program required parents to assist their own children, and the instructor would help with the more "dangerous" manoeuvres (as when they were doing a somersault or the rings). i also recall having to stop and feed Kiara a few of the times. even though i planned her feedings around the classes, it just seemed like she got hungry just watching the kids. it was oh, so blissful when she did sleep for the class. often i would wear my Baby Bjorn and carry her on the course. it was a little tricky at times. i still remember how exhausted i was at the end of the class! funny how tired a mother becomes trying to tire out her toddler.

Photobucket

the next year, Aidan was still too young to be on his own and Kiara was too little to be worth paying to participate. as it happened we got a time slot that was late afternoon and the gym was crazy busy. at the same time Kristian had changed jobs and was working all days of the week. halfway through the session, Kiara was getting to tough to watch and allow me to properly help Aidan. i left her with a sitter when it was possible. one day i managed to get a sitter to come with me and play with her. i think that experience nearly made the new babysitter retire entirely! a little extra cash made her forget the trouble.

i finished that year with both of them in the 6 week spring session. why? because i felt i needed to give Kiara a full opportunity to participate. ironically, she was a good listener and follower in those days. i also felt a little guilty for not paying for her session for the days when she was there following the kids around. this was not easy. it meant her playing (ie. running up and down stairs and hallways) for the hour Aidan was in class. it also meant him sitting on a bench watching Kiara for the second hour. he always had a snack and bag of activities to help prevent boredom.

i was singing hallelujahs the next year when Aidan could be in his own class, unassisted and Kiara could be in a class at her level. at the same time. half the work. half the time.

it must be a grand improvement, because i now drive nearly 20 minutes for their lessons. we have also been enrolled steady since September. usually we don't do gymnastics in the fall. it's a winter thing for us. i also made a mental note to NOT enrol in the spring session. May is fine, but by June we are sick of it!

Photobucket

and i was proud of myself for remembering this important tidbit of information.

then Aidan was invited to join the "Super-Tot" program because he had some talent. for the spring session. he now has a 90 minute session while Kiara is at 60 minutes. this sounds so familiar! the day i made my final decision to not follow my own advice and stop in April, he did a super manoeuvre that made me realize that i made the right choice. on his own he did a "pull-over". which the coaches informed me was very rare for a child his age. Aidan has been on cloud9 because he is "super" and Kristian and i are saving for the olympic program. ha! just kidding. as it happens, the good gymnastic gene is genetic from his Daddy. i was trained to be fearful of heights, cartwheels and any other physical movement on land, water or sky. Kristian has had his work cut out to "un-train"me. laugh.

Photobucket

Kiara has some days where she can walk across this beam with confidence. only to be stricken with intense fear the next. perhaps there is some of my genetics in them after all. in all irony, what does this height-fearing mother do? tell her that there is no danger and to go do it anyway. after all, she had no issues with this when she was 9 months or 2 years old.

my plan is to prepare Kiara for the wait much as i made Aidan wait when he was this age. a snack, special drink and an activity bag. i will bring a book or magazine. and if all else fails, she can watch Dora on my iPod. nothing will prevent me from sitting, with minimal interruption from my most deserved 30 minute break. unless it is watching Aidan practice. which i have missed for the past 18 months. i have had to stop thinking about next September. when BOTH will be in un-parented classes. the only stress i will have remaining is to be forced to watch both of them perform tricky stunts and hope that they listen to the instructions.

has it only been 3 years of gymnastics? because it has felt MUCH longer than that. apparently toddlers with inconsistent listening skills will do that to you. in the past year we often have at least one parent who has 2 young kids in the class - like i did. i recognize the look of "what did i just do to myself?!" in their eyes. then i remind them that it does get better. true.

lately Kiara has been inserting her gymnastics routines with dance. she is not in dance class. yet. (fortunately that should provide me with another hour of sitting and watching.)

i should add that it is not the physical activity that is exhausting...it is the intense 60 minutes of encouraging a willful toddler to stay focused....and perform the routine as asked, and as you know she is capable of achieving.

i also realize that i may look at the moms with young kids and wish (for a moment) that i was back in that time of my life again. these days they often have accomplishments that happen while they are at school or when i am away from them. it was a wonderful gift to be able to spend these early years with them and be a part of their big developmental milestones.

i would do it all over again. they are both more confident. it is amazing to watch them do things that i never imagined possible. in my training for my B.Ed. degree we never went into this much detail in the gymnastics component. i am not aware of any school that has the money to put towards this equipment either. i got well educated as well. it was worth all the sweat and tears and dollars!!

i don't know what next year will hold. Aidan will be away at school all day. Kiara will still be free to do afternoon and some morning activities. i am looking forward to much that this next phase will offer. but it will present new challenges like choosing which activity to participate in. soon enough they will have their favourites and we'll need to decide which will work best for the family. secretly, Kristian and i can't wait to re-enter the triathlon world. this time with kids in tow. (don't worry, Carol, we'll teach them to be fast in the transition and not treat it like locker time! wink!!)

but for today, we will take on the challenges they give us and enjoy the moment.

gratitude in the everyday

busy week!

the grasshoppers are everywhere. i have never LOVED the creatures. which puts them on a level playing field with all bugs. but they are fascinating to look at. my smart boy reminded me that they like to eat plants. so we shoooed it away!

last weekend, we visited my in laws. brought home some yummy fresh garden goodness. peas. carrots. potatoes. swiss chard. zucchini. onions. i'm told that there is more to come!

this is a miniature version of our former sandbox. the design is being carefully guided by our resident "bumble-bee" and "pink piggy".

they keep us on the up and up.
literally!
they took a break and went to day camp together last week. which got Kiara singing all types of tunes about "daycamp". they also let their anniversary-celebrating parents have a few days - and a night! - to themselves. life is a party for these two.
i also announced some amazing news on my scrapbooking blog. i will have a layout published in Canadian Scrapbooker in December. i've had some good friends (and a certain husband of mine) bugging me for a few years now to send in some of my work....but i kept telling them that my stuff was not magazine worthy. annoying friends (and husband)....they didn't get off my case!! sooo apparently i also have to admit that THEY WERE RIGHT, AND I WAS WRONG!! oddly, that fact does not upset me...Kristian is doing the happy dance with me. and also chanting, "i told you so" repeatedly. it is a rough and tough life i lead.....

what are we doing?

good question!

we've been getting messy.....

acting a little odd.....

just plain being silly......
love being happy.
today we are even happier knowing that the garage is sheltering our cars from the mist falling from the sky tonight.
yes. we now have a working fence. and a garage with a working door!
sigh. let the flakes fly!

living out loud

my day started with a headache. and a certain young gal who decided to wake up too early for my liking. the headache grew into a migraine. not something that is great to have with two loud and active kids in house. i ended up in bed with orders to not bother me, be quiet and let me rest while i waited {and hoped} for the meds to kick in.

thankfully by 11:30 life was much happier. for everyone!

driven by mommy-guilt. {honestly....is that not the worst thing on the planet?} i thought i should take the munchkins out for lunch. Tim Hortons came to mind. then i remembered a Timmy's near Kristians' office. perfect! and daddy was even able to meet us.

the first person to come into the place after us, looked at my kids disapprovingly. getting judgemental....this looked seemed permanent on her. i warned you! judgemental. and the kids were behaving very well at that moment. Aidan chose a table. quietly! Kiara found a high chair and wanted in! happily! the woman mutters, "this isn't a day care". i'm not sure it was meant for me to hear or not. i chose to ignore the comment and chalk her up to being out in public for the first time in 40 years.

they weren't too bad during the meal. fairly delightful actually. they both ate all their food with little complaint. except for the tomatoes. and the lettuce. we are actually trying to raise mini carnivores....so that is okay.

after the meal, Kristian gives Aidan some money and encourages him to join the line -- by himself -- and order a box of "donut balls". {yes he came up with that one on his own!}

the kid looked ready to burst with joy!!

until mommy came over and asked if he knew what "donut balls" he wanted.

at that moment he ran over to the shelf to point to his choices...but slipped on the newly mopped tile floor. his pride was shattered and he had to give in to tears. he wasn't hurt badly. but bad enough to not avoid tears.

in the end he didn't get his "donut balls"...which is another story....with boring discipline and whiny behavior involved. but i was disappointed that the response from the staff was so cold. no apologies to him. or us. just a "what do you want?". and later a "can you pick up your box of donuts now?"

"donut balls" {love saying that phrase for some reason....} will have to be ordered another day. we'll try it again. at a different Timmy's. and we'll definitely be looking for a wet tile floor to avoid.

why do they mop during lunch hour? why not even a sign?

after a great deal of tears and frustration we got home. Kiara fell asleep quickly. Aidan watched Shrek the Third and i napped on the couch.

and it was hot outside!

nice to play outside for a bit. more chalk drawings. bike ride. teddy got to ride in a stroller.

and another miracle happened during supper. both kids were amazingly quiet. they ate quite well. Kris and i nearly died from shock.

Kris was doing some more work on the garage. i decided to drive the kids to a park in the river valley. we had gone there yesterday for a picnic supper. but got rained out.

and did they ever have energy!!!!!

glad i took them.
Kiara is big sister to her teddy bear. she had to bring "te-ber" with us. and his stroller! {i left it in the car....i wanted to take photos, not carry a stroller}

this was new. i have never seen them do this outside. i wonder what they are learning on tv?

typical. Kiara with bear securely under her arm.

notice the new footwear. Kiara is in between sizes or something. i haven't been able to find footwear that fits without socks. last week she got a blister from her sandals. i decided i needed to spend the cash on something that fit. and glad i bought Aidan a pair. saved some tears. so hard to know when they actually notice stuff like that and care.

yes. he is all boy. i got poked with that stick later.

so all the photos were only cropped...but just the edges. no other fixing or adjusting. it was a great evening to take photos.

i read recently to take a photo with the light source facing the subject and also the camera. hmmm....kind of tricky. it did help my brain as i remembered to try to not put my shadow over them, or have the sun behind them....there wasn't a whole lot of areas for reflecting the light....but i think i did quite well. especially for a point and shoot.

any advice on cameras to buy or avoid? we're thinking cannon eos. it has has good reviews. nikon is also good. we were thinking d60 with a really good lens. right now we have a sony cybershot with carl zeiss lens. i would love to stick with sony....but the reviews on the sony SLRs haven't been great.

and you may have noticed that i'm doing very well for someone who started her day with a migraine. yay for that! one of the side effects is a burst of energy hours later. it is sometimes handy. before i took the meds i would be in bed the entire day, but still feel exhausted from the pain. and i was sometimes in bed for nearly two full days. not fun. and definitely not an option with young kids running around and needing me either. now really, someone needs to make a pill for parents that bottles the energy their children have. if i could only have this much energy at the end of every day. well...even most of the days! anyways i'm just grateful that there is a pill that i can take. i cannot believe i went for so many years not even aware that something was available to help.

welcome to my rollercoaster

happy days. sad days. sick days. healthy days.

yikes!

could we have some stability here?

i'm hoping to not have to take Kiara to the pediatrician tomorrow. she is still finishing her medicine....and it is obvious she is more than ready to be done with it if i believe the drama she shows when it is "medicine time". thank goodness some smart pharmacist thought to make the medicine spoons look like crocodiles! but she had a fever again tonight. and she started a weird cough last night. by bedtime - and now - she seems well. do i dare hope that it will stay that way?

don't know if you read my "scrapbooking" blog....maybe you didn't know i had one. sometimes i put scrapbook stuff here too. i decided to keep crafts and family sort of separate. i go into details on the scrapbooking blog that not everyone is interested in. (either they don't care or i would bore those that taught me and now i make them read it again!) at the time it made perfect sense....LOL! there's some trivia you maybe didn't need to know today.

anyways yesterday and today i shared happy stories about me and my scrapbooking.

today i posted info and details about the class i'm going to teach at Urban in a few days. (so excited about that...can hardly contain myself!)

yesterday i had a happy posting at SIStv. very cool for me. and shocked me!

i like happy stuff. keep it coming!!

oh and i think i have a prize decided. it will be made by me. and it will be awesome. (of course that is my opinion!) i'll share more about that this week. maybe even photos?!
