overdue

i can't believe my last post was over a month ago! i find the days seem to be speeding up as the kids are getting older. when i started this blog, the days were on the long side. Kiara had just turned one and Aidan was three years old. Aidan was in playschool two mornings a week and Kiara was not walking. Aidan was at the age where he was more independent, but still it was not a good idea for us to turn our back on him for too long! Kiara still relied on us for her entertainment during her short awake hours. many people told me how quickly those days pass, and i took their advice to enjoy them as much as i could (even those super long days).

here we are in another phase. so nice to have more time for myself with Aidan in school all day and Kiara in playschool three mornings a week. i have time to run errands without having to factor in bribes for the short attention spans of my fan crew. cleaning and laundry can sometimes get done more quickly without anyone taking advantage of mom's lack of eyesight....yes, all the big messes seemed to happen on laundry day! phone calls get made without having to be interrupted by screams or "mommy-can-i's". not to mention an hour of uninterrupted time for me to actually put more than a thought or two together!!

March had the kids busy finishing up their racing cars for the AWANA Grand Prix. a huge thrill for them. i had the incredible thrill of attending the local scrapbook retailers event. i'm still in disbelief of how amazing that weekend was. taking classes from very talented people. my idol being one of them! enjoying supper and then having them visit the store where i work. seriously had so much fun that i could barely sleep! one of those events in my life that seemed to good to be true. i find myself having to remind myself it all really happened....not just a happy dream.

we also finalized the details for a trip to heat and sunshine! which meant passports and other traveling preparations. which is a story in itself.

the bad timing of computer issues and breakdowns. which gained me a brand new computer that i really hope does not give me issues.

it was not possible for us to conveniently leave town to coordinate with the school spring break. that last week was spent packing and keeping the kids active and happy. they are good for entertaining themselves. however a week solid of mom also busy doing "boring stuff" was not on their top ten list. to keep a balance we spent a few days on the town. the local science centre was fun for a day, and the kids got to try wall climbing too. {you could say the kids are experts at wall climbing....or so i expected. apparently they were a little nervous climbing past a certain point even when they were harnessed. or perhaps it was their fear of me dropping them?! ha! not all days with them were peaceful and relaxing that week.}

then off we flew to Maui....

Photobucket

other beach holidays Kris and i have taken mean clear blue skies. our holiday started out on the overcast side. high clouds, but still not clear blue. despite the appearance each day was very hot! flip flops every day. sunglasses were a necessity. bathing suits rotated each day because they took a few days to dry in the humidity. we also learned that sunscreen was needed even with the clouds! i think the clouds added to the humidity levels.

there is not a bad beach to be found on Maui. each one was different and had something unique to offer.

the one outside our condo was great for finding seashells and coral.

the one in the above picture would have been fun for exploring if the tide were lower.

we found several sandy beaches. some small and with few crowds. others large and busy. some had lava rocks to explore at some point.

some were calmer for the kids, while others had waves strong enough to take Kris and i off our feet!

Photobucket

we realized that we should have stayed longer. Kiara was asking to go home every few days, but it was hard to know if she was serious. she seemed to have fun and enjoyed the trip. Kristian figured the island could benefit from another engineer and decided that he wanted us to move immediately. one of the flyers advertised a local scrapbook store, and he wasted no time in driving me to it. you know what he was thinking!! it was nothing like Urban Scrapbook. i don't honestly know how this store has stayed in business. if Pat and Lori ever want to start a new store.... well..... i think Maui needs them. desperately. i told Aidan one morning that when we retired, we would move here....and he and Kiara can bring their families here for vacations. he looked stunned and wasted no time to say that he would also be moving with us!!! he cried when we got home because he already missed Maui.

it was a perfect vacation. we did a few touristy and fun trips. we relaxed by the pool and the beach every day. we drove up to the volcanic crater one day. i have a fear of heights that has improved, but still lingers. the drive to the crater was tough for me....the passenger! i know for fact that i could never have safely driven myself....not when i had to close my eyes from time to time! for Aidan and Kristian it was a highlight. it is a shock to myself that i am already thinking ahead to the next trip up the crater...apparently the sunrise is spectacular {as well as the night view.} with the four hour time change, all 4 of us were awake at 4am the first morning. the exact time we would need to leave the condo to catch the sunrise. {there's a travel tip i did not read...but it should be published!}

the kids traveled well. even with the exhausting return trip. having movies and tv shows at their fingertips helped all of us. i told Kiara that she was not allowed to act "silly" on the airplane. and left it at that. there have been enough times both of the kids have been goofy while we're driving. this time i let the "i wonder what they would do if i acted silly" question get answered without my ideas. this time my strategy worked. phew! turns out they were both a delight.

the fact that truly surprised all of us was the size of the island. in a matter of 30 minutes drive, you go from beach to desert to mountain.

every day was hot. as the week progressed the clouds disappeared.

now we are home. tired from the trip home. and jet-lagged. basically we each had 2 hours of sleep last night. sleep in airports and on planes is not in our genes. it was not fun to look around at other lucky people who were happily sound asleep! a long afternoon nap and late bedtime is our present plan. fortunately we all slept the afternoon away...now if we can get a solid 8 hours sleep tonight but be awake by 9am.

and the news this week...

where is time going?! i am still needing to finish my Christmas shopping...but finding it tough this year to do without the kids. it was so easy to do when they were small and had no idea what i was buying....or i could even hide it from them. these days its tough to buy a pack of gum without them discovering it! the time passes so quickly when they are both in school and i don't have much time in the evenings to do it. online shopping looks very appealing right now. if i knew it would be delivered in time...

Kristian and Kiara bought a pet Beta fish earlier this year. he became known as Princess Purple. whether or not he knew the meaning of the word 'princess', he never let on. neither did the fact that he was purple. anyways it ended up being my job to clean the tank. and it sure got dirty with just one fish in it! last week i thought of putting him in a smaller tank that might be easier to clean. after doing that i realized that his castle did not fit inside it, and he loved the castle. so i moved him back to the original tank. too many moves or too much temperature change....the shock killed him in 24 hours. great. Kiara is having a tough time getting over this death.

Photobucket

even with Prince Blue in the picture. she was definite about wanting a blue fish. part of me wishes i had just gone to the store on my own and came back with a replacement fish. but then, she would have noticed a detail absent that i would have missed. when Princess Purple died, he turned gold. the kids noticed his colour was changing before he even became fully dead. so odd!

Prince Blue was purchased along with a new smaller tank. he is pretty active and outgoing. i can't believe i just described the personality of a fish. really. but it is true!

by the way, Prince Blue has a middle name. oh, i am not kidding. it is Frosty the Snowman. we are in for some treats. Kiara has quite the imagination.

Photobucket

last night was her preschool Christmas concert. she has been excited for weeks about this! it was also the first concert our kids have participated in that Kristian was able to attend. it was a very big night.

Photobucket

she sang with all her might!

they had yummy snacks and fun Christmas crafts after the program.

we came home and Kiara commented that we should leave out some cookies for Santa. what?! she apparently knew that Santa would come after the concert....and took that to mean immediately! this next week and a half will be a long one for her. and Aidan. so, essentially, it will also be a long one for me. unless i don't get my list completed by Monday!

some photo fun

could we have fit more into the past few months? yes. and no!

what a crazy busy fall. then we all caught the cold going around town. bonus. thankfully we are all pretty much healthy now. but it meant that two out of four of us needed antibiotics in the end.

Kristian missed an entire week of work. as the week went on and he was not getting any better i got more worried. partly due to not liking it when he is sick and feeling bad for him. partly due to my plans for the weekend. i planned to leave town with some girlfriends. i know how tough it is to be a parent and be sick at the same time. i didn't want to leave him home with the kids and be sick. thankfully he was feeling better by Friday and even better by Saturday. perhaps it was a blessing because they had a more restful weekend staying home. he was back to work on Monday and it is great to see him feeling more like himself.

here are some photos he took of me using his iPhone4. not bad considering it is taken by a phone!

Photobucket

a little grainy. but still impressive.

he took this of me when i was having trouble with my camera. it wouldn't focus. ugh! i was sweating!! then i realized that i had accidentally switched from 'auto' to 'manual'. amazing what a little switch can do.

Photobucket

a perfect afternoon for a camera.

Photobucket

i have an interesting stance with a camera up to my eyeball. same pose in many of these photos.

Photobucket

this was not taken by a phone. i just poked my lens out the car window and snapped as we sped along the curvy road. i got a few that were fun! this is why i love digital. i would be much less daring if i had to pay for the developing of the 'wonder what this will do?" photos.

i took one photo while i was away on my weekend. it was a ladies retreat with about 800 women. they did have a professional photographer as part of the event. i admit i was distracted at times when i was checking out her equipment and seeing if i could figure out what shots she was trying to get. funny! my photo was of a purse i was thinking of buying for Kiara...a cute little pink flowery thing. i had thought about messaging it home to see what she thought, then changed my mind and decided to surprise her instead. she LOVED it. when we were not shopping, we were being inspired.

the keynote speaker was Carol Kent. she is a professional speaker and also book author. her personal story was unique and incredible. it is hard for me to express in my own words her story. there just is no coles' notes version happening from me! but it did leave me with a stronger desire to enjoy each day with joy. more gratitude for the blessings in my life.

we woke up to a foggy morning. the kids are beyond excited that Halloween is around the corner. AWANA had 'crazy-hair-night' last night, so that helped with their excitement. Aidan's costume this year is a store bought version. i have a feeling that he may have a desire to be more creative next year. i do personally prefer the home-made costumes....but i lack the skill to create them well.

i just learned about this one last night. wow! talk about the cool kid.

Happy CANADA day!

this was the first year in a long time that we had a low key Canada Day. last year was a disappointment in celebration compared to the year before. celebrating with small kids there are just three things we look for.

small crowds. inexpensive. entertaining.

last year we waited in line for face painting for over an hour. only to make it forward a couple of feet. then to discover that they were charging something like $10 for a partial face paint. it looked like another couple of hours of waiting, so we left.

then the kids had to wait in long lines to enjoy the jumpy tents. we had a few scares because the kids decided to leave and move to the next one. and we missed them leaving the first one! wearing red and white turned out to be a big mistake!! talk about blending in.

thank goodness for Cap'n Arrr! and the firetruck hoses.

this year....we all missed Cap'n Arrr!....if he was even one of the entertainers. perhaps he'll return to another venue around here this summer. we hope.

instead we decided to delight the kids with late night fireworks.

Photobucket

with the long days, the kids have slowly been falling asleep later at night. and waking up later. bonus!

Photobucket

we played a board game. watched a movie. {they LOVED the Adventures of Clutch Powers. actually we all enjoyed it!} then we packed up our cameras and headed to a community nearby.

Photobucket

it was a treat. we loved to hear the kids giggle. i had never taken firework photos before. Aidan and i had fun. mine were the top 2, and this one is Aidan's. he was very proud of the effect he achieved! i would say we did rather well considering it was new to us.

we enjoyed a short visit with Kris' brother and met his newest family member. i was thrilled to be allowed to take some photos of them all. 920 and a totally full image card later. my niece was shocked when she thought i had said 120....she was speechless when i corrected her. ha! well, it isn't difficult to get some amazing shots when you fill a card! when it was time to leave, Aidan decided to hide in his aunt and uncles' closet. lovely. we didn't make a big deal of it. we left him in his hiding spot, said our good-byes and piled into the car. it wasn't long before he decided to join us. maybe it was some coercing from his uncle? not that he wouldn't love to have another kid to make their days more interesting! ha!!

then we enjoyed a little BBQ in our own backyard. i picked up some Chicken Burgers sold by the LoonySpoons and CrazyPlates ladies. {Janet and Greta}. they are sold at Costco. we were impressed. except Kiara. she is already tired of hot dogs and hamburgers. tough luck for her!

in the evening light, we took some family photos.

Photobucket

and i can't take just one. fortunately my family is fairly cooperative. although this was the best one from the evening.

the next photos are the ones that did not make the 'top 10 good' list. but they made the 'top 10' in other lists. you'll see why.

Photobucket

i have a remote for my camera. it is sometimes difficult to hide. i can choose to delay photos. this time i tried the immediate function. of course Kiara is the only photogenic one in this photo!

Photobucket

not sure what is going on here? maybe a exaggerated 'cheese' smile?

Photobucket

okay. just being plain silly. mom and dad are not always cooperative either!

Photobucket

Kiara's favourite thing is to "HOP" on our lap.

Photobucket

we will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary soon. we were laughing at ourselves in some of the photos. just because we look like we have been married for 15 years!!! this was not one of those. apparently we have now perfected the 'ball-cap-kiss".

Photobucket

then we were a family of three. this is a nice photo of us.

Photobucket

and now there are four. she certainly brought some 'spirit' into our lives!!

this is where i ask myself: how difficult can it really be to have 4 people smile NICELY at the same time? should it really be that impossible?!

Photobucket

one of the last photos. i think it captures "us" rather well.

Photobucket

of course the best family photo of the night was taken by Aidan. go figure!

short trip

away from home.

i was trying to remember the last time we left home for fun. as a family. i think it would have been the summer before Kiara turned 2 years old? we took her camping for the first time that summer. we had planned to stay only 5 days, but we had so much fun that we added on 3 more days! with the weather in Alberta being the way it is, you definitely want to take advantage of good days. ha! we drove to the nearest Wal-Mart and loaded up on more food and clothes and diapers. and had a sort of real cup of coffee while we were there. good times.

this trip was work related for Kristian. but we all joined him, and drove down a day earlier. the first day we all went to the Calgary zoo. it was one of the first nice days in a long while....and it was a weekend....which meant it was literally a "zoo"!

a fun place for photos....
the kids saw other children climbing all over these structures...and you could tell that they were anxious to give it a try too. not dangerous at all! yikers!!

they had to be satisfied with this.

the best money spent that day. it was a tiring day. and would have been a grumpy day if we had to drag the kids or carry them through the park. we both had memories of another large zoo when Aidan was only 22 months old....he insisted walking. slowly. and it was a HOT day. it took every ounce of our parent creativity to keep him happy and moving along from one exhibit to the next, in the shade. all of their wagons had been rented out. but this time we were lucky! how cute is this little zoo-wagon?! no arguments from them over riding in it too.

my darlings....

i was disappointed that i did not bring the camera out for the prairie dogs. these are a different animal from the prairie pest known as gophers or Richardson Ground Squirrel. we had the opportunity to chat with one of the zoo keepers, and happily learned the differences. they are full of personality and photogenic creatures! my loss.
happy that i did not miss this one.....

they were wandering around the zoo. i was so happy to see this one, and that the kids got to see the peacock in "full dress". i remember hearing once that the "eyes" in the feathers were to ward off predators....giving the impression that they were facing an army of birds...not just one. wonder if that is actually true?

anyways a fun day!

more to post about our little trip. but we are off on another one!!! love it. so i'll have to share more next week.

i came across this older post of Becky Oehlers' a few days ago....this looks like it would be fun to take the kids.... and watch the movie "Cars" repeatedly on the trip too.

some humour

time for a lighthearted post!

Canada Day was a few days ago, and the kids had a fabulous day. which meant that we had a fabulous day too!

we went to a nearby town and took in their festivities.

....waited in the facepainting line for nearly an hour before i found out that there was a charge. with kids our age, facepaint does not last that long....and to pay for it?! maybe when they have an allowance.

....very impressed how patient and amazing the kids were to wait in line and then leave without paint on their faces!

so it started out rather dull......

but then picked up when they joined Cap'n Arrr and his ship!

Aidan saw him in the distance while we waited in the facepainting line....ran up to shake his hand and got a postcard and an "arrrrr"! they were thrilled to enjoy his show.

i'm not sure whose face i like better in this picture.

Aidan's buddy saw the "treasure chest" and couldn't resist taking a peak.

he soon learned that you don't play tricks like that when their is a pirate with a sword nearby!

he really caused a stir!

posing....

LOVE Aidan's face here!!!

that's a good one!

i only wish i knew the expression on Kiara's face. really.

i think she is arguing with the pirate captain....

okay, i guess the kids are done. Aidan couldn't stop giggling....

yes. our little goofballs. love them.

this was more lame than last year. they turned the water pressure down this year. no more aiming for the big ol' firetruck in the distance....now it was orange cones. hmmm

Kiara had a try.

yes, this one definitely had a good day! Kristian treated us to milkshakes at Jack's Drive In.

it was a letdown after last year. there were more people. and less activities. never a good combination. even the jumpy things had huge line-ups.

i think the highlights were:
-Cap'n Arrr
-sports area and bubbles
-sparky the fire dog and firehoses
-and believe it or not, Aidan and Kiara got to watch the firemen leave very quickly on an emergency call....very exciting times.
and the excitement continues. they got to stay up later last night playing with neighbors. they got to stay up even later tonight when we had friends over. lucky little kids! they certainly keep it real.

holiday

Monday...

our family tradition.

Heritage Festival.

this year our babies joined the vikings....

Kiara got into the dancing at the Scandinavian tent.

a classmate of Kristians' from the UofA Master Studies of Science in Engineering has been dancing with this group for several years.

a lot of the countries have fairly warm traditional dresses. i took that as a good indication that their climates were usually on the "cooler" side. one other fact we have observed is that most of the national dishes around the world have potato as an ingredient in one form or another. and the hotter the climate....the hotter the food! also the volume of the music increases closer to the equator.... not to mention the inclusion of a "frozen" food at the food tents of the hotter countries.

i find this all an interesting generalization. i'm sure there is a history class somewhere that anayzes this in great detail....

this year we were joined by Kristians' family. Kiara was being goofy with gramma. every time gramma looked over her shoulder, Kiara would duck and hide her head under her hands.

she did enjoy the dancing. all of it. this "dragon dance" was at the Borneo pavilion. she tried to join in. twice. and this was not a good thing.

do you see Aidan right behind her? there was a "balloon man" making balloon creatures for the kids. Aidan wanted wings. so that he could go faster. exactly what we needed. we cried with him when one of the wings popped on the walk back to the car. he sat down, off to the side of the trail, to take a rock out of his shoe. and the balloon rubbed against a twig. after the shock and grief was over he told Kristian that he wanted to make balloons that wouldn't pop. he has a few ideas too. isn't this how all the great inventions were born?!

thirteen years ago Kristian and i got married.

i know. we are over halfway to our "silver" anniverary. {this is the "lace" anniversary. thrilling.}

i think he is aging nicely. it helps when he is married to such a low maintenance, easy-going and all round wonderful person such as myself. or maybe not. this is one of my favourite photos of him. and i'm responsible for snapping it!

he surprised me with a new camera for our anniversary.

and now i have to take a photography course to understand it. for now i've just been playing around and getting used to it. i have done some reading on what it can do. {slow process} and i can't wait to try these new techinques. so you may have to put up with some unnecessary photograpy for awhile. i think i'm on page 15 of the manual...not even to the really intersting stuff yet!

so we got the Nikon D80 with a great lens. we are both very happy.

i love the detail in this shot. there seems to be so much more dimension in the photo.

and remember that i'm not close to maximising what this camera can actually do.

here is a shot using the action auto setting. fast camera! i still love our Sony point and shoot. but it amazes me how fast the shutter is on the SLR.

i sure got spoiled.

and i was not a good wife. it was one of those years when i didn't even make him a card. it just isn't his thing. he still has his surprise album from December and his Fathers' Day gifts from the past 3 years at home. these were meant to be at work. sitting on his desk. so his co-workers can daily see how incredible his family is.....

i think the only gift i could give him that would make him truly happy would be an airline ticket somewhere. i don't think that will be happening for a long time. unfortunately. for now, he'll just have to put up with me snapping photos of him....
